Newborns Sessions

What to wear

Neutrals colors are best

If you are causal family, then now is not the time to put on the heels or tie. If however, you are more comfortable being a little dressed up, then by all means have fun with it. While my number one thing to tell clients is to pick clothing that they feel comfortable in, I do always suggest starting from a neutral palate. Dressing in bright colors or patterns can take away from your newborn. Your baby should be the star of the session. Sticking with neutral colors will help with this. Neutrals do not have to mean a plain white T-shirt. I consider neutrals as a palate of likeness (gray, navy, tan, white, ivory, soft blue, soft pink, etc.) The most important part is that the colors compliment one another. Textures are wonderful as they add depth & appeal but are not distracting to the eye. Fabric that has texture or flows is always nice. Usually new Mamas do not feel their prettiest (although they should). Fabric that moves and flows is a flattering option, especially when choosing lighter colors like whites and creams

What to put on baby....

Babies are teeny tiny and most clothing can still be a little big. When choosing your baby's outfit , make sure it fits! I suggest  trying the clothes on your baby before the session day. I love the beauty of a baby that is swaddled. There are adorable swaddles out there now with lovely prints and patterns. If the rest of the family is dressed plainly, the baby will shine in a sweet swaddle with some spunk. Or, select a simple and timeless swaddle for that classic imagery that you’ll never tire seeing. Because newborns are so tiny, I prefer to keep their wardrobe simple too. I like classic onesies and swaddles. Knit blankets with textures are beautiful as well. Textures on baby can be beautiful too, little knit hats and bonnets or even knit pants can be adorable! If you want to send me some snapshots of outfits laid out I would be happy to give you feed back!

What to Do

Where will we shoot...
The session usually will take place in your home, preferably in the nursery, living room, and master bedroom.  .  Please do  not worry about your house being a mess—you just had a baby!   All you need to do to prepare is let in as much light as possible. Opening curtain and blinds will help a lot. Generally morning and late afternoon light are the brightest coming thru windows. I'll quickly push things out of the area I'm shooting so that your home will appear to be spotless in the photos. The only thing I will ask you to do is have your bed made with a neutral quilt/comforter on top. Some prints can be fun! Just use your judgment Your bed makes for a great place for cuddly family photos!

Making sure your little one is comfortable and happy during the shoot...
Newborns are very unpredictable. I expect that your baby will cry and will need to eat during the photo shoot. I allow more time so we can take plenty of breaks for feeding and changes. A full belly makes a happy sleepy baby! Also keeping the house toasty warm will make them happy too! I recommend keeping it 80 degrees or warmer. We may be hot but the baby will he happier!
